A collaborative study involving our group, “In situ particle-to-fibre transformation of hydrogels for 3D printing,” has been published in Nature.
In this work, the authors report shear-extensional in situ particle-to-fibre transformation (SHIFT), a new biofabrication strategy that transforms hydrogel particles into highly aligned microfibres during extrusion. By creating subvoxel fibrous architectures directly within printed constructs, SHIFT introduces pronounced structural anisotropy into soft hydrogels and provides a versatile approach for hierarchical tissue fabrication.
The resulting anisotropic structures promoted the formation of exceptionally long, aligned myotubes and accelerated skeletal muscle regeneration in a volumetric muscle loss model. Our team contributed to the skeletal muscle regeneration experiments and characterization. This work expands the capabilities of 3D bioprinting for constructing structurally organized and functionally regenerative tissues.

We are excited to share that our review, “Advancing Stem Cell Bioprinting to Bridge Engineered and Natural Tissue Constructs,” has been featured on the back cover of Advanced Materials (Volume 38, Issue 42).
In this review, we summarize recent progress in stem-cell-based organ manufacturing and highlight strategies for developmentally inspired tissue fabrication. By integrating intrinsic cellular programs, including genetic networks and self-organization, with extrinsic engineering cues such as bioink dynamics, microfabrication, and mechanical regulation, we propose a conceptual framework that brings instructive bioprinting together with autonomous development.
The cover depicts stem-cell biomanufacturing as a vibrant “Life Tree.” The DNA-helix trunk, robotic bioprinter, and hydrogel-rooted living bioinks symbolize the convergence of biological programming and precision fabrication, while the organ-like canopy illustrates stem-cell self-organization, maturation, and functional tissue formation. Together, these elements envision a path toward bridging engineered tissue constructs with natural regeneration.

We are excited to share that our study, “Cryopreservative Bioink Enables Direct Bioprinting of Adherent Cells,” has been featured on the cover of Advanced Materials (Volume 38, Issue 40).
In this work, we developed CAMP (Cryopreservation for Adhesion and Maintenance Printing), a DMSO-free bioink platform that preserves adherent cells during liquid nitrogen storage and enables direct 3D bioprinting at 4–8°C after thawing. By inhibiting ice recrystallization and maintaining cell adhesion, CAMP achieves approximately 80% cell viability and integrates cryopreservation, bioprinting, and functional tissue formation into a streamlined workflow. In a rat femoral defect model, cryopreserved CAMP constructs promoted complete bone regeneration within three months.
The cover depicts snow-covered mountains and glaciers as the cryogenic environment, while bioprinted tissues emerge as wintersweet blossoms. Inspired by the resilience of wintersweet blooming through the bitter cold, the artwork illustrates how cryopreserved cells can develop into robust and functional tissues through precise bioprinting. This work advances on-demand biofabrication toward ready-to-use and clinically applicable engineered tissues.

We are excited to share that our latest study, “Nanoengineered extrusion-aligned tract bioprinting enables functional repair of spinal cord injuries,” has been selected as a cover article in Cell Stem Cell.
In this work, we introduce a nanoengineered bioprinting strategy that harnesses shear forces during extrusion to generate continuous, hierarchically aligned tissue tracts—spanning from nanoscale collagen fibrils to centimeter-scale constructs—without post-processing. This platform enables precise guidance of neural cells and axons, and demonstrates robust functional recovery in spinal cord injury models. The cover highlights a new paradigm in biofabrication for building anisotropic, regenerative tissues with clinically relevant dimensions.
