Dr Gu is currently appointed as a Full Professor at Institute for Stem Cell and Regeneration (ISCR) | Institute of Zoology (IOZ), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and group leader of Bioinspired Engineering. He has interdisciplinary training in materials chemistry and stem cells. His first doctoral career (2009-2013) is mainly engaged in research on stem cells at Northeast Agricultural University and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He completed a second PhD (2013-2017) in Chemistry at University of Wollongong (UOW) followed by being appointed as a Principal Investigator at IOZ, CAS and establishing his lab, Bioinspired Engineering. He became Full Professor at IOZ, CAS at the end of 2019. Professor Gu has developed novel biomaterials and used bioprinting for advanced human stem cell culture and 3D tissue engineering and reported the first examples of generation human tissues by 3D bioprinting human neural and pluripotent stem cells (Gu et al, 2016 and 2017, Advanced Healthcare Materials). Professor Gu has previously published has 22 first-author or corresponding author peer-reviewed journal articles, including Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Advanced Healthcare Materials, National Science Reviews, Advanced Theraputics and Stem Cell Reports etc., mostly on bioprinting, biofabrication, biomaterials and stem cell engineering over the past 5 years. Besides, Gu has been co-author of 3 book chapters and co-inventor on three patents.

XINHUAN got her B.S and M.S in chemistry at Yangzhou University. In 2019, she obtained her Doctor’s degree in physical chemistry at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. There, she designed material based composites and novel structures with visible-light response properties. After that, she joined Gu lab for postdoctoral training, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Designing biopolymer-based micro-hydrogel for applications in constructing vascular networks.

Shuo Wang

SHUO got his B.S degree in Mechanical Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology. After that, he deviated his research interests in biomedical engineering. He got his M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological University in 2018, specializing in cartilage tissue engineering by using a new microfluidic approach. He joined Dr. Arinzeh’s lab at New Jersey Institute of Technology as a postdoc from 2018 to 2019 and studied several biomaterials for bone, cartilage, and neural tissues. He joined Dr. Gu’s lab in 2020 as a postdoc. In his spare time, he enjoys watching stand-up comedy and movies, and playing with his two sons.

Research Interest:
He is currently focusing on regenerative medicine and biomanufacturing research. His research interests include the novel muscular tissue engineering strategies by using 3D printing, electrospinning, and the interaction between muscle cells and microenvironment and external physical stimulants.

Postdoctoral Associate

SHEN got his B.S degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering at Yunnan University. Then, he successfully obtained his M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2016 and 2020. During his doctoral studies, he focused on developing novel inks and approaches for printing tissues and organs. In 2020, He joined Dr. Gu’s lab as a postdoc.

Shuyu Zhang

SHUYU got her B.S degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Then, she was recommended to the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, and obtained a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology in 2018. During her doctoral period, she conducted retrospective or prospective clinical trials on anti-coagulant and anesthetic drugs to develop personalized dosing algorithms based on pharmacogenomic or metabolic findings. After graduation, she had experience in Individualized Medicine implementation in a 3A hospital and then drug development in a high-tech enterprise. In 2020, she joined Dr. Gu’s lab as a joint postdoc.

Research Interest:
Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic modeling based on Organs-on-chips.

Ronghang Wang

RONGHANG got her B.S degree in Thermal Engineering at Central South University. After that, she got her Ph.D. degree in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. She focused on the microfluidic system and wearable sensors during her doctoral period. She joined Dr. Gu’s lab in 2021 as a postdoc. She enjoys reading science fiction, painting, yoga, and playing with her little baby in her leisure time.
