Dr Gu is currently appointed as a Full Professor, Director of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Engineering Lab for Intelligent Organ Manufacturing and group leader of Bioinspired Engineering, at Institute for Stem Cell and Regeneration (ISCR) | Institute of Zoology (IOZ), CAS. Dr Gu has interdisciplinary training in materials chemistry and stem cells. His first doctoral career (2009-2013) is mainly engaged in research on stem cells at Northeast Agricultural University and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He completed a second PhD (2013-2017) in Chemistry at University of Wollongong (UOW) followed by being appointed as an Associate Professor at IOZ, CAS and establishing his lab, Bioinspired Engineering. He became Full Professor at IOZ, CAS at the end of 2019. Prof Gu focuses on developing novel biomaterials and advanced technologies, 3D/4D bioprinting to regulate stem cell fate, fabrication of functional 3D organs and even live organisms in vitro. These studies are applied to understand the mechanism of life and establish novel therapeutic methodologies. Prof Gu has previously published 33 first-author and corresponding author peer-reviewed journal articles, including Adv. Funct. Meter., Adv. Sci., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Materials Horizons, Adv. Healthc. Mater. etc., mostly on bioprinting, biofabrication, biomaterials and stem cell engineering over the past 5 years. Furthermore, Prof Gu has been invited to finish 3 book chapters and co-inventor on seven patents.

XINHUAN got her B.S and M.S in chemistry at Yangzhou University. In 2019, she obtained her Doctor’s degree in physical chemistry at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. There, she designed material based composites and novel structures with visible-light response properties. After that, she joined Gu lab for postdoctoral training, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Designing biopolymer-based micro-hydrogel for applications in constructing vascular networks.

Postdoctoral Associate
SHEN got his B.S degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering at Yunnan University. Then, he successfully obtained his M.S and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2016 and 2020. During his doctoral studies, he focused on developing novel inks and approaches for printing tissues and organs. In 2020, He joined Dr. Gu’s lab as a postdoc.

Shuyu Zhang
Postdoctoral Associate
SHUYU got her B.S degree in Pharmaceutical Analysis at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Then, she was recommended to the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, and obtained a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology in 2018. During her doctoral period, she conducted retrospective or prospective clinical trials on anti-coagulant and anesthetic drugs to develop personalized dosing algorithms based on pharmacogenomic or metabolic findings. After graduation, she had experience in Individualized Medicine implementation in a 3A hospital and then drug development in a high-tech enterprise. In 2020, she joined Dr. Gu’s lab as a joint postdoc.

Heng Liu
Postdoctoral Associate
HENG completed his B.S. in Clinical Medicine at Jining Medical College in 2016, followed by postgraduate studies in Orthopaedics at Bethune Medical College of Jilin University, where he received his Master’s degree in 2019. He then pursued his doctorate at the University of Munich, sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), and earned his Dr. Med. degree in 2022. Upon returning to China, he became a joint postdoctoral fellow at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital and the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, by joining the Gu lab in 2023.

Xiaolong Kou

XIAOLONG got his B.S and Ph.D. degrees at Jilin University in 2011 and 2016. During the doctoral period, he focused on AFM-based single molecular force spectroscopy and investigated telomere DNA structure. After graduation, he went to the Institute of Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, worked as a postdoctoral associate. During his postdoc, he focused on the AFM-optical imaging system. He developed AFM based tip-enhanced CARS system and other super-resolution optical imaging systems. In 2022, he joined Gu’s group as an engineer.
